Abstract:		 An archaeological evaluation, excavation and watching brief took place during the laying of a new water main to link the Loddon Water Treatment Works to Ditchingham. A very low density of archaeological remains was encountered along the route of the pipeline which appears to coincide with the location of a Roman Road running north-west out of Ditchingham and the site of a barrow to the north of Ditchingham. A layer of redeposited natural found in the roadway at Ditchingham could have formed part of the make-up of the Roman road, but there was no dating evidence to confirm this. No evidence was found for the barrow on the Bungay Road north of Ditchingham. One isolated pit of probable Saxon date was recorded to the north of the barrow site. This type of pit - isolated and containing burnt material - is often thought to be prehistoric in date although later examples do occur.
