Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology at the former Middlesex University, Trent Park in the London Borough of Enfield. The archaeological work was conducted between 25th November and 19th December 2016. Thirty trenches were carried out across the site. Many were targeted on features identified by the recently completed Heritage Assessment of Aerial Imagery Air Photo Services 2016) and shown on historic maps, relating to the medieval deer park, 18th and 19th century use of the site and the WWII Prisoner of War camp. The evaluation found some evidence for prehistoric features in Trench 15 and early medieval features in Trench 27. Two trenches identified the remains of 19th and 20th century glasshouses in the walled garden area. One trench identified the remains of a possible Nissen hut. Two other trenches found the bases for the posts for the barbed wire fence that surrounded the main house during WWII. Barbed wire was also found, backfilled into a pit.
