Abstract:
Border Archaeology Ltd was instructed to undertake a Photographic Record (approximating to Historic England Level 2) of The Old Court 2A Lower Street Cleobury Mortimer DY14 8BN in connection with its conversion to residential use (NGR: SO67485 75871). Much of the original mid-late Victorian fabric was found to survive intact. Roof fittings, including bargeboards, guttering and downpipes, appear original, as do the timber panelled doors and fenestration. Internally, all rooms retained their period character and much architectural detailing, with clear evidence of original use recorded photographically. Stone steps and in-situ flagstone and timber flooring survive throughout, as do many original fittings, including sash cords, pulleys and catches, and architectural features such as corbels, grilles and alcoves. Doors are mostly original, including a heavy security door into the cell area, which retains its original bolt-and-staple locking mechanism.
