Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology on land to the south of The Factory, Ottery St Mary, Devon (SY 0940 9521), during February 2016. The work comprised the excavation of 6 trenches totalling 180m in length, with each trench 2m wide. These provided a spatial sample of the site. The desk-based assessment has established that a number of buildings existed to the north of the site from at least 1788-9, with these shown as a number of separate structures on maps of 1845 and 1890. By the 1950's and 60's a series of large industrial sheds covered most of the site and formed part of a larger building complex. Excavation revealed the remains of a late 18th century leat depicted on 19th century maps and running through the centre of the site. This had been infilled in the 1950's and 60's and no evidence of earlier activity was found underneath. The remaining trenches contained largely negative results. No finds were recovered pre-dating the post-medieval period. |
