Abstract:
As the site lies in the floodplain of the Pool River Historic England has requested a desk-top due to there being potential for surviving peat deposits. An application has been submitted for the redevelopment of the site to include demolition of existing buildings and erection of a basement plus part 8/9/10/11/12 storey building comprising 296 apartments, construction of an estate road, car and cycle spaces and landscaping. A review of existing information has identified archaeological finds and features dating to the Roman and Post-Medieval periods; the remains of former buildings dating to the Post-Medieval period; a local building and locally registered parks and gardens dating to the Modern period. The significance of these is low. The potential for finding buried heritage assets within the study area is thought to be low for occupation sites and residual finds. The site was common land until the 19th Century when it was enclosed, being used for arable and meadow. From the early 20th Century the site was a sports ground with pavilions and tennis courts. It is currently used for storage and recycling uses with compounds and mobile structures. The historic land use would not have truncated any potentially surviving archaeological deposits. There is the potential for finding residual finds within the site. A basement will be excavated ranging from c.2.6m and c.0.1m in depth. This has the potential to truncate any potentially surviving archaeological deposits, however, the prospect of this is thought to be low based on the archaeological and historical evidence.
