Abstract:
Excavation revealed an area of unenclosed Later Bronze Age/Earlier Iron Age occupation represented by perhaps as many as six post-built roundhouses. The site was subsequently abandoned but lay partly with an area of Later Iron Age and Roman enclosure, more fully explored on an adjacent site. The most significant discovery was the finding of Anglo-Saxon deposits including two sunken floored buildings. Radiocarbon dating of residues on one Anglo-Saxon vessel returned a date within the 4th century AD with a second sample returning a date of late 4th/ 5th century AD. This suggests that Anglo-Saxon colonization of the valley was under way before the official end of Roman Britain in AD410.
