Abstract: |
Negative watching brief with just remains of north to south ridge and furrow seen in sub-soil. The aim of the brief was to see if the Roman road known as Ryknield street (the present A38) crossed the development area. Former excavations at the Crest Motel and Nuns street showed archaeological remains. These were in the form of part of the Roman road at the Crest Hotel 1.5 km south -west of the development area and Nuns street 1.2 km north- east. Therefore as the development area was situated between the two sites, there was a chance the Roman road could be found linking the two former excavations with possible associated settlement. Because the site was on a slope much of the ground was being built up therefore there was minimal impact into any surviving below ground remains. Just the first 15 metres of the area north -south was stripped to natural but nothing of significance was found. |
