Abstract:
In January 2017 Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned by Merlin Entertainments Group Ltd to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Alton Towers Resorts, Alton, Staffordshire. The work was carried out in part satisfaction of conditioned planning consent for the demolition of the existing Log Flume Attraction and the installation of a new rollercoaster and construction of associated buildings, landscaping and groundworks. The watching brief was unable to monitor the demolishing of the Log Flume attraction and the excavation of the footprint of the new attraction. The groundworks had already been completed before the notification and arrival of the archaeologist monitoring the development. The soil stratigraphy in the northern part of the development site consists of made ground. The groundworks undertaken for the new ride is likely to have destroyed any surviving archaeological remains within the areas of deep excavations, but archaeological remains may have survived in the southern parts of the development area where no excavations took place.
