Abstract: |
In order to advise the planning authority on the archaeological potential of a proposed development site on land at West Drive, Arlesey, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developers to undertake a field evaluation by trial trenching. Three trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. These revealed a considerable depth of modern overburden, with heavy tree rooting, immediately above the natural substrate. The evidence, including the presence of plastic bags in the made ground, indicates that the site has been subject to significant disturbance in recent years. A buried soil was encountered below the made ground in Trench 2, but this did not appear to extend to the north or north-west. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered during this work. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might have a negative impact on remains of archaeological significance may be considered to be Low for all periods. |
