Abstract: |
This report describes the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology at the Market Place, South Shields (NGR NZ 36068 67127) between the 19th and the 21st January 2015. The archaeological work was commissioned by Prospect Archaeology Ltd, on behalf of Muse Developments in response to a planning condition attached to the construction of a new Central Library and Digital Media Centre. The evaluation revealed significant modern disturbance, with a number of modern services and deposits of made ground identified. These deposits of made ground were excavated to a maximum depth of 1.7m. These deposits appear to be layers of made ground providing a solid foundation for the construction of the Market Place. |
