Abstract:
Archaeological excavation was carried out at 42 Trinity Street from March to May 2017 by PCA during the expansion of the basement levels at the site. Geotechnical Test Pitting revealed potential for Roman funerary deposits at a depth of 1.35m OD, which lay below the foundation level and limit of excavation at 1.70m OD. Therefore, although a significant amount of Roman material was recovered from the excavations, no features of Roman date were recorded. A single layer attributed to the medieval period appears to represent light agricultural activity at this time. The rural nature of the site remains through to the 17th-18th century where a number of rectilinear pits, interpreted as potential planting beds, were created. Habitation of the site begins only in the 19th century with the construction of two buildings on the property, which are later joined. Further additions to the property were undertaken in the early 20th century, which are likely representative of the changes to the building by the Surrey Dispensary upon ownership.
