Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Galliford Try PLC on behalf of the Clouston Group Ltd to undertake a series of archaeological investigations within the Stephenson Quarter. The investigations detailed in this report were carried out in the south-eastern and south-western parts of the site and comprised a recording exercise (SSQ17), an evaluation (SQN17) and an excavation of the iron foundry remains (SFT17). Historic map regression shows that the south-eastern part of the site was formerly occupied by Smith's Shops or Workshops associated with Stephenson's Engine Works (Ordnance Survey map of 1862), and subsequently by a High Smithy (Ordnance Survey map of 1896). Wright and Brown's Iron Foundry was located in the south-western part of the site (Oliver's 1849 map; 1862 and 1896 Ordnance Survey maps); by 1919 this had been replaced by the Forth Banks Engineering Works. The archaeological investigations have demonstrated that below-ground remains of Wright and Brown's Foundry; and the multi-phase remains of the Stephenson Works survive in an excellent state of preservation, despite the scale of truncation after the change of uses of structures in the 20th century and subsequent demolition of buildings.
