Abstract: |
Results of a desk-based summary and historic visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land at Lower Drayton Farm, Penkridge, Staffordshire, in advance of the planning application for an anaerobic digester and associated access track. The proposed anaerobic digestor would be installed on land enclosed in the 17th-18th century from a former open-field system centred around the shrunken medieval hamlet of Drayton. The manor of Drayton has a complex descent having formerly been a monastic holding, but in its later history it was purchased by Sir Edward Littleton, who built Teddesley Hall and invested a large amount of money in his estates, it appears including Drayton. The walkover survey suggests that the majority of the proposal area has suffered significant levels of disturbance in the later 20th and early 21st century and that it is not suitable for geophysical survey. Archaeological evaluation trenching or monitoring is also not recommended in this instance, due to the severity of the modern impacts. |
