Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation in advance of construction on land west of the racetrack at Newbury Racecourse. Only fifteen of the proposed trenches could be excavated because of site constraints but the evaluation was partly successful in determining the character of features identified on aerial photographs. No evidence of terraced workers' cottages was found in Trench 8 but the heavily disturbed ground and frequency of post-medieval linear features and service trenches in this area suggest that survival of archaeological features is likely to be poor. Remnants of the house known as Round Oak survived in the form of backfilled cellars and rubble and suggest that the basic floorplan may have survived demolition although the nature of the bricks and cellar construction did not help date the structure. Three post-medieval ditches, thought likely to mark changing land divisions or garden features associated with Round Oak, were recorded in Trenches 11 and 12. All of the trenches on the land immediately to the west of the racecourse showed evidence of landscaping probably related either to activity during World War II or to the construction of the racecourse and associated structures. Only one feature pre-dating the post-medieval period, a Middle/Late Bronze Age boundary ditch, was recorded in Trench 14.
