Abstract:
AOAOC Archaeology Group was commissioned to undertake an archaeological watching brief at 4 School Brae, Cramond, Edinburgh on groundworks associated with the extension of the pre-existing building. Works were required due to the presence of nationally significant archaeological remains in the surrounding area. The development area lies to the west of the Roman Road leading to Cramond. The Roman fort (c.140AD) is centered to the north of the development and was extensively reoccupied during the Severan invasion of Scotland. Recent excavations to the north have shown the presences of deep archaeological deposits including the Roman Road, outer-fort ditches as well as possible prehistoric remains and evidence of 7-10th century occupation. The hand dug foundation trench was monitored revealing a simple matrix of dark brownish-grey clayey silt over a natural of light orange greyish-brown clayey silt. No significant archaeological find or features were uncovered during works.
