Abstract: |
English Heritage (now Historic England) added Wanstead Park in the London Borough of Redbridge to their 'Heritage at Risk' register in 2009, in response to concerns that the framework of designed vistas and lakes were losing value. In January 2013, English Heritage commissioned Compass Archaeology (with a consortium of experts) to carry out an assessment of the heritage status of Wanstead Park at a strategic level, informed by assessment of the condition of individual features, which could be used to address the 'Heritage at Risk' status of the Park. This document forms the report element of the Strategic Assessment and describes the scope of the project, its method and results, including conclusions relating to the condition and heritage value of the historic features, and recommendations for future measures. There are also three appendices, comprising a detailed gazetteer of all heritage assets in the Park, a critique of source data and a technical report on survey results including Lidar data. These appendices can be obtained on request from Compass Archaeology. |
