Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned to undertake historic building recording of the undesignated Boleyn Ground (also known as West Ham United Football Club Stadium) prior to its demolition. West Ham United or Thames Ironworks FC, the name originally given to the club, was established in 1895 by Arnold Hills managing director of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company. Thames Ironworks FC initially played at the Old Castle Swifts' ground at Hermit Road in Canning Town, before moving to a purpose built stadium, the Memorial Ground in West Ham. It is not until the early years of the twentieth century that West Ham FC took up residence at the Boleyn Ground for its inaugural 1904/05 season. The Boleyn ground, typical of many football league clubs developed piecemeal, a new West Stand, with a terraced enclosure, was built in 1925 and in 1965 an extra section, A Block and a terrace for 8000 was added to the south end of the West stand. In 1969 the East Stand known as the 'chicken run' was demolished and replaced by the present East Stand. The most significant change to affect the design of stadia, the conversion to all seater stadia, was implemented following the recommendations of the Taylor Report. Accordingly the Bobby Moore Stand, built in 1993, the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand (originally the Centenary Stand) constructed in 1995 and the West (Dr Martens) Stand of 2001, were each purpose-built as all seater stands. |
