Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology was commissioned by Kings College London to undertake built heritage recording of a World War Two Access Tunnel to an Air Raid Shelter under Borough High Street from no. 143 Borough High Street, Southwark. In September 1939 the London Passenger Transport Board offered the disused tube tunnels beneath Borough High Street to the Home Office for use as a public air raid shelter. The scheme was approved by the Home Office and the contract to design the new tunnel entrances was awarded to Mott, Hay and Anderson. Of the six new entrances one was built at no. 143 Borough High Street. Construction of the six entrance tunnels was completed in the autumn of 1940. The staircase entrance tunnels were formed of precast reinforced concrete rings, which were bolted together, grouted and caulked so as to be watertight. Evidence of the waterproofing process was discovered during the recording. Having constructed the staircase entrance tunnels, concrete staircases were formed inside. The access tunnel inside no. 143 Borough High Street was recorded during its demolition. Metal handrails, installed in response to the Bethnal Green Station disaster in 1943 were also recorded. In 1954 it was decided to derequisition the entrances and to hand the tunnels back to the London Transport Executive. Contractors reinstated the entrance tunnels in 1959-60. Concrete used to fill the staircase passages was encountered during the archaeological investigation. The surface-level entrances were handed back to their owners in 1960.
