Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology was commissioned by Mrs Oyesanya to undertake building recording of the Cowshed at Cowman's Cottage, Old Church Lane, Stanmore, London Borough of Harrow. Research revealed that the Cowshed formed part of the home farm of the Manor House estate, built on the instruction of Samuel Wallrock during the second half of the 1920s. Wallrock intended that his estate would be self-sufficient and was stocked with a herd of pedigree Jersey cows. The Cowshed was only used for its intended purpose for a very short period of time. Following Wallrock's declaration of bankruptcy in 1931, the Manor House was repossessed and the cows were sold in early 1932. After the Second World War, the northern part of the estate was acquired by the local authority and laid out as Bernays Gardens. The Cowshed was used as a public park shelter until it was sold with Cowman's Cottage in 2011. The Cowshed was dominated by five gables. Recording revealed that tethering rings and name holders were still extant inside the building. The brickwork in the gables was decorated with applied timbers in imitation of a timber-framed structure. The red brickwork of the Cowshed and Laundry Building was in Flemish bond. The lower part of the brickwork in the rear wall of the Cowshed and the side wall of the Laundry Building appeared to be the remains of earlier in situ walls from the former Manor House that was demolished on this part of the site before the Cowshed was constructed. |
