Abstract: |
Pre-Construct Archaeology carried out building recording of St Thomas's Church, Southwark, London in October 2016. The Church is Grade II* listed and lies in a Conservation Area. The recording was carried out as a condition of Listed Building Consent before alteration. The church was built in 1701/02 as the chapel of the newly reconstructed St Thomas' Hospital replacing a medieval church. The early 18th century brick church and belfry have distinctive stone quoins. The crypt survives with its two east-west brick barrel arched vaults. The belfry still retains its original bell frame and timber floors with central openings for the bell pulls. After 1708, the attic of the church served as the 'Herb Garret' of the hospital and from 1821 it was used as a hospital operations theatre. In 1900/01 the architect Arthur Bartlett adapted St Thomas's Church into the chapter-house of St Saviour's. The upper west gallery, the pews and the memorials were removed and the crypt was concreted. Other alterations included the renewal of the windows, the laying of a new wooden floor, the infilling of the colonnade on the north side of the church and the creation of the north access to the crypt. The Church was renovated in 2008/09 with the insertion of the higher level mezzanine over the galleries, a partially raised floor in the church and the subdivision of the basement for meeting rooms and toilets. The 1900/01 and 2008/09 changes were recorded during the building survey. |
