Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned to undertake an historic building survey of a former air raid shelter at Green School for Boys, Isleworth, prior to its demolition. The air raid shelter lies within the grounds of the late 18th century Busch House and was built to serve the pupils of the former Busch Open air School, which was built in the grounds of Busch House in 1938. The air raid shelter was constructed along the lines of a 'trench shelter', a popular method of providing limited protection through the excavation a strip trench and the insertion of a pre-formed rectangular shelter, built from timber, corrugated iron sheet or in this case shuttered concrete. The removed soil was packed back around and mounded above the structure to provide it with an additional measure of protection.
