Abstract:
results of an archaeological evaluation and subsequent monitoring and recording carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land at Brookfield Farm, Little Torrington in Devon, as part of the planning requirements for a proposed commercial fishing lake. The six evaluation trenches targeted an area of the development shown on historic mapping to be in close proximity to a series of structures. None of the trenches revealed evidence of the structures extending into the site, though they did identify a spread contained within a building platform cut and associated boundary ditches, one of which may date to the 14th century. The southern extent of the site was shown to be heavily affected by land drainage and the creation of existing ponds. Subsequent monitoring confirmed the results of the evaluation with no further features identified. The results indicate this sloping south-facing site formed part of a wider landscape of medieval and post-medieval farming. The reasonable sized assemblage of 13th-14th century pottery recovered is one of the best excavated assemblages from rural North Devon.
