Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in March 2017 at Land North of Church Lane, Three Miles Cross, Spencers Wood, Berkshire. Thirty nine of the planned forty one trenches were excavated comprising a 4% sample of the development area. This evaluation recorded archaeological features in the form of ditches, pits and postholes. There are three areas of archaeological potential; Trench 26 to 30, Trenches 35 to 39 and Trenches 43 to 46. A limited finds assemblage was recovered, with a large number of features remaining undated. From those finds recovered, dating ranged the Late Iron Age/Early Roman to the post-medieval period. The small assemblage of worked flint recovered indicates a generally low level of prehistoric activity within the wider environment. Considering the low number of prehistoric finds and the secondary ditch fills from which the majority of worked flint was recovered, it is likely that the lithics are largely residual. An unexcavated pit in Trench 43, produced a single piece of Late Iron Age to Early Roman pottery from the surface of the feature. Several of the trenches (44 to 46) within the vicinity of Trench 43 produced ditches and gullies, which, although undated, could indicate a dispersed field system of Late Iron Age or Roman date. A gully in Trench 27, produced burnt flint and pottery from the Roman period and a dumped deposit of hearth material indicating nearby settlement activity. Although undated, the concentration of archaeological features to the south may be of a contemporary date due to their close proximity. The majority of dating evidence recovered from the site can be attributed to the medieval period and was recovered from a number of agricultural field boundaries. A single sherd of medieval pottery was also recovered from the topsoil of Trench 26. Trench 36 contained two ditches containing CBM dating to between the 15th to 17th centuries. |
