Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology at Brandon House, Southwark, between November of 2014 and December of 2015. The site was multi-phase, dating from the Roman through to the post-medieval period. The site appears to have been situated on an eyot or a peninsular heading out into the Borough Channel. Early Roman activity comprised ground raising, pitting and a number of clay and timber buildings. The site went into decline during the later Roman period and dark earth formed. Later activity comprised the footings of medieval Brandon Place, the establishment of Suffolk Place by Charles Brandon on the site and a late post-medieval industrial building.
