Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering approximately 76.5 hectares, was carried out on agricultural land surrounding Arkall Farm, Tamworth in advance of the determination of a planning application for a proposed housing development. The data across the site is dominated by anomalies related to agricultural activity, particularly ridge and furrow cultivation, which is evident across the whole of the survey area. Other linear anomalies are caused by field drains and 19th century field boundaries. Large high magnitude sub-circular anomalies are due to infilled marl pits. In the north-eastern corner of the site rectilinear anomalies forming three sides of a possible enclosure of unknown date have been identified. Three discontinuous linear anomalies in the southern half of the site may also have some archaeological potential. However, on the basis of the magnetic survey the site is assessed as having a low archaeological potential. |
