Abstract: |
In June 2004, English Heritage undertook an archaeological investigation and analytical field survey of Westwood Common on the west side of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The Westwood covers an area of about 600 acres (242ha) and is mostly open grassland. The English Heritage survey recorded a number of features which pre-date the common including Bronze Age and Iron Age burial mounds, the fragmentary remains of possible Iron Age or Romano-British fields and an oval-shaped enclosure of Romano-British or early medieval date. Features which post-date the creation of the common include lengths of track ways, groups of pits for clay and chalk extraction, and areas of medieval and Second World War cultivation. (This was report 25/2004 in a previous series) |
