Abstract:		 This report is based upon the results of unpublished fieldwork at the medieval Cistercian abbey of Rievaulx in North Yorkshire undertaken in 2015 by Historic England, together with a limited amount of new survey work undertaken by the author in the spring of 2018. The abbey is situated in the valley of the river Rye, just north of Helmsley in North Yorkshire, at the centre of an extensive precinct encompassing a variety of earthwork remains from the monastic and later periods. This earthwork evidence is assessed to develop a new understanding of the development of the landscape during the period of the abbey's life, and the use of the site for iron manufacture in the later 16th and 17th centuries. The ruins became part of a landscape park in the later 18th century and in the 20th century the abbey became a much-visited historic monument in the care of the State.
