Abstract: |
In October 2005, English Heritage undertook an archaeological investigation and analytical field survey of an area of pasture known as Castle Garth, at Cawood in North Yorkshire which lies adjacent to the south-western side of the former Cawood Castle, one-time residence of the Archbishop of York but now is largely demolished. Fragments of the residence's once magnificent late medieval gardens survive as earthworks on Castle Garth. The most striking aspect of the garden's design is a rectangular plot in which a symmetrical arrangement of ornamental ponds and former orchards are surrounded by a moat, now dry. From this layout, aspects of the lost buildings of the palace can be understood. Only one of the ponds still holds water. A large irregular depression was certainly used as a willow bed in the mid-19th but it probably originated as a clay extraction pit in the early post-medieval period. The survey also identified the remains of several post-medieval buildings and associated enclosures. (This was report 16/2005 in a previous series.) |
