Abstract: |
In 2002, English Heritage carried out survey and analysis of the earthwork remains associated with the Augustinian abbey of St John the Evangelist at Haughmond in Shropshire. The investigation advanced understanding of the medieval abbey and of changes after the Dissolution when it was converted into a private residence and afterwards incorporated into a landscape park. The survey found no pre-medieval remains and therefore the first earthwork phase related to the period of the medieval abbey. The investigation traced the entire course of the monastic precinct and as a result the full extent of the medieval abbey is understood. The second period represented by the earthworks relates to the century after the Dissolution when the abbey was a private residence and this is followed by a third phase of earthworks after 1740 relating to the incorporation of the site into a landscape park. (This was report 10/2003 in a previous series) |
