Abstract:
A Level 2/3 historic building survey was carried out of Nos. 200-201 High Street, Lincoln, prior to its demolition and redevelopment of the site. The survey followed on from an earlier historic building assessment and was also carried out independently of a pre-demolition site evaluation and post-demolition site excavation. The site covered three distinct properties with boundaries still based on earlier burgage plots in an area of archaeological significance. Mid-18th century brickwork was parts of the building complex fronting High Street and along an alley forming the south site boundary. A cellar under No. 200 had stone walls, extended with 17th century brickwork, which may have been of 15th-16th century origin. The street frontage is shown fully occupied on Stukeley's town plan of 1722 but the brick evidence suggested a major rebuild at some point after this date. The property's later history in the 19th-20th centuries is one of retail and professional use, with some domestic accommodation. One prominent concern was general merchants J.G. Doughty and Sons who occupied much of the site from c.1840 - c.1920.
