Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake an archaeological watching brief during construction works at Stratford-sub-Castle, centred on National Grid Reference SU 13420 31700. The watching brief consisted of monitoring work associated with the reinstatement of two drainage ditches as well as the construction of an access track. The site is located to the south-south-west of Old Sarum hillfort, and specifically within the boundary of Scheduled Monument 1004688, designated as Romano-British settlement at Stratford sub Castle. As a result, development has required the issue of Scheduled Monument Consent. The watching brief was undertaken between 25th and 26th November 2013. The groundworks closely followed the line of previously extant ditches which were known to have been routinely cleared out in the past. As such, the absence of any confirmed archaeological features or deposits is not surprising, despite the archaeological potential of the area. Several areas of chalk rich material were exposed by the excavations. One stratigraphically appeared to be modern in date, while another contained fragments of medieval roof tile. However, the latter material may be residual within this context. No confirmed archaeological features or deposits were found.
