Abstract:
Preceding geophysical survey and trial-trench evaluation in 2015 recorded evidence generally indicative of land use activity dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods. Twenty-nine additional trenches were subsequently excavated across the 4.3ha Field 1 area, 18 of which contained archaeological remains, comprising ditches/gullies and pits. A small quantity of residual prehistoric and Roman finds, and a pit containing probable Early Iron Age pottery provide evidence for land use activity within the wider landscape during these periods. The majority of dated features were medieval or post-medieval in date. Two quarry pits are thought to be medieval, or perhaps later, in date and are suggestive of agricultural land use, most likely relating to activity previously recorded on site. Field boundary ditches of post-medieval date correlate to boundaries depicted on historic maps. A number of undated ditches/gullies and a pit most likely relate to the medieval and post-medieval, or earlier, occupation of the site.
