Abstract: |
In August 2018 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation on land at The Anchor PH, Upper Street, Stratford St Mary, Suffolk (NGR TM 047 344; Figs. 1 - 2). The evaluation was undertaken in compliance with the initial requirements of a planning condition attached to planning approval for the proposed construction of five new dwellings (Babergh District Council Planning Reference DC/17/05887). It was required based on the advice of Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service Conservation Team (SCC AS-CT) The evaluation revealed an undated ditch and undated ditch terminal. Brick walls and demolition debris associated with a structure/s depicted on the 1898 and 1904 OS maps (Figs. 8 and 9) were recorded, and also a modern pit, post hole and services. Despite the fact that the site was relatively undisturbed there was no evidence of the cursus monument traversing the site, and no residual finds were present. |
