Abstract:
In April 2018 Archaeological Solutions Limited (AS) carried out an archaeological excavation at the Priory Hotel, Tollgate Lane, Bury St Edmunds Suffolk. The Priory Hotel is a hotel complex situated partially within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Babwell Friary. The site is an area of archaeological significance within the precinct of the medieval friary (HER BSE 014). The standing friary walls are Scheduled as part of the Friary and are Grade II* listed (466966), as is the Priory Hotel itself (466965). The hotel has 16th century and later phases and possibly an early core centred on the medieval Prior's Lodge. Parts of the precinct wall are incorporated into the south and western parts of the hotel. The excavation was preceded by a trial trench evaluation (conducted in 2016) and incorporated an historic building assessment of the standing curvilinear wall. These investigations demonstrated that the earliest primary fabric within the curvilinear wall, including the flint and brickwork, is consistent with a late 17th or 18th century date, perhaps 18th century and contemporary with the re-fronting of the main building. The evaluation and excavation recovered prehistoric, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, medieval and post-medieval artefactual material but much of this was not in its primary depositional context and there was a high degree of residuality. The earliest dateable context was F2064, a small pit recorded in Test Pit B4, which contained a single sherd of Roman pottery. Following this, evidence for medieval burial was recorded, representing part of the cemetery associated with Babwell Friary, although this was subject to some disturbance. Quantities of medieval CBM recovered during these aspects of archaeological work may relate to demolition/modification of the Friary following the dissolution. Later evidence would appear to relate to further modification and development at the site in the post-medieval to early modern periods.
