Abstract: |
Building recording and a watching brief were undertaken at the Old School House, Throckmorton, Worcestershire (NGR SO 9814 4985). The investigations were undertaken on behalf of Neil Wicks, who intends to convert the former school building for residential use and for which a planning application was submitted and approved. Historical evidence showed that the school was built in the 1870s on land that was given to the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church by the Rector. The school was built at a time of reform in education with the principle of education for all, no matter what class, being the driving force. The small brick building was eventually closed in the 1940s and then sold to a local farmer for use as a storage shed in 1950. The watching brief revealed no features of archaeological interest and despite the proximity of a medieval moat and earthworks of a shrunken village, only a small number of ceramic sherds dating from the 18th century onwards were recovered. |
