Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at BTR land, Brockhill East, Redditch (NGR SP 403660 268840). It was undertaken on behalf of Persimmon Homes (South Midlands) Ltd, who intends to construct a residential development of 296 dwellings for which outline planning permission has been granted (2014/256/OUT). Thirty-six trenches were excavated across the site in order to investigate its archaeological potential. One Late Bronze Age pit was identified, containing 23 sherds of pottery, possibly representing a single vessel. Alongside these sherds were fire-cracked stone and charcoal fragments, suggesting the use of hot-stone technology. No heat alteration was evident within the feature, however, so it is likely that the pit was used for refuse and that the heating of the stones occurred elsewhere. A single sherd of Bronze Age pottery recovered from an Iron Age enclosure some 750m south-west of the pit hinted at a low level of activity in the wider landscape during this time period, and the pit excavated here adds to that evidence. Later activity on the site consisted of low level agricultural practices, including ridge and furrow and a post-medieval field boundary. |
