Abstract: |
This report summarises the findings of an archaeological watching brief carried out during ground reduction works associated with the development at the Old Joiners Workshop, Main Street, Askham Richard, York. An archaeological condition was attached to this site due to the potential for archaeological deposits associated with the medieval village and post medieval activity being present. During groundworks a significant amount of human remains were encountered- mostly being disarticulated with three articulated human burials being present. The articulated burials were laid in a supine position and orientated west to east as is common with Christian burials. Later medieval (11th to 15th century) quarrying is likely to have disturbed this earlier burial ground, which is located outside the parameters of the existing churchyard and church (St Mary's). There is potential for further research beyond this initial evaluation of results. To support this and possible AMS dating, an archive shall be deposited at the Yorkshire Museum. |
