Abstract:
A detailed gradiometry survey was conducted over approximately 4.72 hectares of agricultural land, mainly under pasture. The site is occupies a poultry farm which has been disused for some years. Widely spaced curving parallel anomalies are present in the eastern section southern field which have been identified to be probably caused by archaeological features. These are most likely representing ridge and furrow. In the larger, western section, a field boundary is visible in the centre of the field. Also present are also two positive anomalies indicative of cut features of a possible archaeological origin and a modern pipe or service. However, following research into the site, the three cut features are only visible on modern satellite images, so their origin is more likely to be of a modern, and possibly agricultural, nature. Several other anomalies are present in this site. Magnetic disturbances related to nearby metallic objects and scattered magnetic debris are present in several areas located towards the extremities of the individual fields. Isolated magnetic spikes distributed throughout the survey area are likely caused by modern ferrous debris located in the shallow subsurface.
