Abstract: |
An archaeological trial trench evaluation on land west of Mead Park, Fremington, was undertaken by AC archaeology during January 2018. The site covers approximately two hectares and is situated within a larger pasture field to the west of Mead Park and north of Bickington Lane, in-between the villages of Fremington to the west and Bickington to the east. It is situated within the modern and historic Fremington Parish on ground which slopes gently down to the southwest, at a height of c. 24m above Ordnance Datum. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of 8 trenches totalling 250m in length, with each trench 1.8m wide. The trial trench evaluation provided largely negative results. The paucity of features and finds indicates that the area has been agricultural in historic times and there is no indication for settlement or use of the site prior to this. A single gully, the only feature, is consistent with being a former field boundary forming the pattern of smaller fields which previously extended across the area as shown in historic mapping. |
