Abstract:
Building repair works on the Scheduled site in Muggleswick, the ruined remains of a chapel block of a monastic grange of Durham Priory, necessitated an analytical assessment, building recording works and an archaeological watching brief during works. A record was also made of an early 20th century Dutch barn that was dismantled. A community-based archaeology project with the Upper Derwent History and Archaeology Society extended the project to include a geophysical survey, a topographic survey, further building recording works, and a series of evaluation trenches. The latter examined the relationship between the now-reduced western end of the chapel block and a larger range that bounded much of the southern perimeter of the grange site. Trenching defined many details of the larger structure, confirming it to have measured some 10.7m by 40.5m in plan and to have been detailed with clasped and pilaster buttresses of Romanesque or early gothic character, to have had an internal structure supported upon circular masonry piers. The chapel block was found to have abutted the larger range. A further trench in the field to the north of the chapel ruin examined part of the raised platform that likely defines the extent of the grange buildings to the NE; here a number of wall alignments were revealed; the trench encompassed part of the interior of a cobble-floored stables or byre. A number of carved architectural stones were recovered from or recorded at the site.
