Abstract: |
Allen Archaeology Limited (AAL) was commissioned by Towerview Property Group Limited to undertake an archaeological excavation on land at Laundry Cottage, Horsham Road, Petworth, West Sussex as a condition of planning consent for a new residential development at the site. An archaeological evaluation of the development site by trial trenching was carried out by Allen Archaeological Limited in November 2016 revealed remains dating to the Iron Age, Roman and post-medieval periods. Those of Iron Age and Roman date are of high local significance due to the rarity of remains from these periods in the local area. The Roman remains were encountered in a single trench in the south of the site where the proposed development will have minimal impact. However, the Iron Age remains were revealed in the east of the site in an area where they are likely to be damaged or destroyed by construction work associated with the proposed development. |
