Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks associated with the replacement of the existing twin potable water supply pipeline crossing the Western Solent from Lepe in Hampshire to Gurnard in the Isle of Wight. The monitoring was carried out during all ground disturbing works at Lepe (comprising the temporary working area north of Lepe Country Park, the lower car park at the Country Park and at Mopley) between the 21st August 2006 and 30th August 2006 inclusive and at Gurnard in the Isle of Wight between 6th November 2006 and 4th December 2006. The work was undertaken on behalf of Halcrow Group Limited for 4Delivery Limited and their clients Southern Water. The groundworks were carried out by Visser Smit Hanab (UK). Lepe, Hampshire Although no deposits or features of archaeological significance were identified, a small assemblage of worked flint from the site was noteworthy. The Hampshire HER records very few prehistoric remains in the vicinity, most notably a Bronze Age bowl barrow c.1.5km to the north, together with an Iron Age shell midden and coin, and two worked flint flakes identified as Neolithic. Against this background, a total of 21 pieces of worked flint recovered from an area measuring c. 500 square metres is significant. Gurnard, Isle of Wight A gully or truncated ditch that produced pottery dating to the 3rd - 4th century AD perhaps represented an element of a Roman field system associated with the nearby Gurnard Roman Villa. A nearby posthole produced pottery of a similar date together with a sherd of possibly 13th-century quartz-tempered pottery.
