Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Winnington Gardens, Hanley Swan, Worcestershire (NGR SO 81538 42648; WSM 70291). It was undertaken on behalf of Nigel Teale, who intends to develop five residential properties and associated infrastructure, for which a planning application has been submitted. Permission was granted subject to conditions including a programme of archaeological works. The site lies on the eastern edge of the settlement. The land was previously under ridge and furrow, and this can still be seen in the adjacent land to the east. No medieval features were identified on the site, though there was a large presence of pottery in the top and subsoils, testament to the area's history of pottery production. A post-medieval ditch was excavated, that was probably associated with a former field boundary visible on the 1st edition OS map. A 19th century? rubbish pit full of ceramic roof tile was also discovered. |
