Abstract: |
The farm lies adjacent to the remains of Eldon deserted medieval settlement, which is arranged along both sides of a village green, with the traces of the deserted buildings visible as well-preserved earthworks. As a result of the potential for remains of the village, a targeted programme of archaeological monitoring of this area was requested by Durham County Council, to fully characterise the site's archaeological interest. The principal objective of the archaeological monitoring was to carry out a targeted watching brief during the proposed groundworks. The aim was to identify the existence, nature and extent of any sub-surface archaeological remains present |
