Abstract: |
The historic building survey and documentary research which focused upon the historic structures, that retain, support or are tunnelled into the cliff face to the rear of nos 149-156 Snargate Street, Dover, has shown the site has a long and complicated structural and historic development, which has been much altered and adapted over the preceding two centuries but particularly since the end of WWII. Possibly the most significant features were the remains of a bread oven and evidence of two former tunnels. The oven was located to the rear of no. 156 Snargate Street, recorded as a small confectioners shop in the trade directories from 1832. One of the tunnels, although blocked, was known as the Shaftsbury tunnel, an access to a complex of air raid shelters, some re-using existing tunnels, excavated during the Second World War. |
