Abstract: |
A site investigation recorded alluvium overlying peat deposits which in turn overlay gravel terraces belonging to the Shepperton Gravels group. The observed peat, which comprised distinct bands interspersed with further alluvial layers, and which can be indicative of a developing land surface, was noted in three boreholes (BH01, BH03 and BH05). Although no finds predating the 19th century were recovered from any of the boreholes, the presence of peat deposits and other locally retrieved finds indicate that there might have been human occupation within the site and wider area during later prehistory, with marginal activity located at the edges of the Bankside channel, the predominant topographic feature beneath the site. Overall, the watching brief has shown that the study area is partially underlain by natural terrace gravels and is also incised by the Bankside Channel. For much of the period from the Bronze Age to the post medieval period, the site and area has been susceptible to frequent flooding, as shown by the recorded alluvial formation. |
