Abstract:
Albion Archaeology was commissioned to carry out historic building recording which comprised a measured survey, photographic survey and recording during demolition. The cottage was built during the 19th century, not appearing on the enclosure map of 1806. As originally built it was in cob and thatch, 1½ storied, one up one down with a brick stack in the east end for a single hearth and a narrow outshot at the rear. The roof was made with small section round-wood with common rafters. Examination of the clay walls during demolition showed horizontal lifts but no vertical jointing indicating cob rather than clay lump construction. Subsequently the building was doubled in size with a timber-framed extension at the east end. The first edition OS map of 1884 shows the cottage in its extended form. Evidence for the extension comprised the thatched roof, its hearth attached to the back of the original and a single corner-post and diagonal brace observed during demolition. The roof was supported by two collar/rafter principle trusses and rafters in sawn timber. During the 20th century the timber-framed walls in the east half were replaced in brick, leaving the original roof in place. The building fits a pattern in this part of north Bedfordshire of small cottages constructed on the roadside waste and is similar to other examples of clay-walled cottages built in this area during a period of population expansion in the nineteenth century.
