Abstract:
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by Mr. Andrew Whitfield of Nyetimber Limited to undertake an archaeological and geo-archaeological watching brief at Nyetimber Manor, West Chiltington, West Sussex (NGR 50836, 11942). The site was owned by the Cluniac Priory of Lewes in 1139. The original medieval house was timber framed but has undergone extensive rebuilding, mainly in the 14th, 16th, 18th and 20th centuries. The earliest archaeological remains identified during the current work comprised two early 16th-century pits/post-holes, perhaps together with two nearby undated post-holes. These features possible related to the start of a phase of rebuilding that began in 1540. Two 19th- to 20th-century rainwater tanks were recorded adjacent to the west wall of The Hovel, while evidence for the original probably 18th-century open-fronted eastern elevation of the Hovel was found behind the existing eastern wall. Nineteenth to twentieth century garden features, comprising the remains of a set of brick steps and a low revetting stone wall were recorded to the south of the Manor House. Undated dump deposits related to landscaping were recorded between the house and The Hovel.
