Abstract:
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by CgMs Consulting on behalf of their clients, Taylor Wimpey to undertake an archaeological watching brief during groundworks at 'The Ridings' development (formerly 'Oddstones'), Stane Street, Pulborough, West Sussex. Four features were recorded in the watching brief. The finds appear to suggest that further elements of the field system perpendicular to Stane Street previously identified in the evaluation as possibly prehistoric in origins may actually be of a medieval date (11th-13th century). The watching brief did yield some further prehistoric material; one unstratified and two worked flints from feature [108] (only seen in section). When taken with the results from the evaluation it does appear that some Neolithic/Bronze Age and possibly Middle to Late Iron Age activity occurred on the site, although interpreting exactly what this was is hard to define from the available results. No other significant remains were recorded at the site.
