Abstract:
Twenty-two evaluation trenches were excavated, covering 5% of an 8.5ha area, in advance of a proposed housing development. The site was located on relatively level ground with very gentle decrease in elevation from the southeast (9.31m AOD) to the northwest (7.46m AOD). The natural stratum comprised the West Melbury Marly Chalk Formation. The site consisted of disused agricultural fields and former orchards with derelict farm buildings located in the south portion. Archaeological remains were located in eleven of the evaluation trenches with the highest density being within the three most southern trenches. Prehistoric artefacts, mainly consisting of probable Iron Age pottery and a few pieces of struck flint, were recovered from six pits scattered across the site with earlier (Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age) pottery found in one pit in the northwest area of the site. The highest concentration of features and associated finds were dated to the early Roman period (AD 50-80) and comprised two ditches, three pits, and one posthole. The presence of a puddingstone rotary quern and butchered bone, along with plant macrofossils found within environmental samples, suggest that food processing and consumption were taking place, possibly indicating a nearby settlement. The medieval period was lightly represented by two gullies and a pit, all containing pottery dating to the 12th century. This may suggest continued use of the area for agricultural production. Primarily post-medieval and modern artefacts were recovered from topsoil and subsoil sampling, with all older features sealed by the subsoil.
